Abstract:
Three Israeli poets who are children of Holocaust survivors - Rivka Miriam (Rochman), Oded Peled, and Tania Hadar - gave different meanings to the Holocaust in their poetry. Rivka Miriam and Tania Hadar embrace the tragedy of the Holocaust and identify with it. This identification leads Rivka Miriam to idealize Israel as a new beginning, while Hadar continues to detect the terror of the Holocaust beneath even the calmest of Israeli surfaces. Peled sees the Holocaust as a moral legacy that warns against inflicting on another any kind of collective punishment or persecution, and uses the Holocaust as an indictment against Israel's anti-Palestinian policies.
