Abstract:
Discusses Smolar's article "Les Juifs dans la mémoire polonaise" ("Esprit" 127, 1987). Smolar contended that Polish antisemitism during World War II was caused by the fact that Jews favored the Soviet occupation and even collaborated with the occupiers; he even uses the word "traitors". The authors explain the complex situation of minorities, among them Jews, before and during the war, especially in the eastern parts of Poland, and the various attitudes of the Jews towards the Soviets, concluding that Smolar's interpretation is not justified.
Note:
A response to the article by Aleksander Smolar, "Les Juifs dans la mémoire polonaise," which appeared in French in "Esprit" 127 (1987) 1-31. The response appeared in English in "Polin" 4 (1989) 204-225 and in "From 'Shtetl' to Socialism; Studies from 'Polin'" (1993) 385-406.
