Abstract:
Discusses rabbinic rulings on "Kiddush Hashem", focusing on whether Jews were allowed to violate religious commandments during the Holocaust. According to some rulings, a Jew is not allowed to commit a transgression at a time when forced conversion is being carried out, but he is allowed to do so if a non-Jew demands it simply for his own personal benefit. Notes that the latter fits the case of the Holocaust and, therefore, most of the rabbinic responsa during the Holocaust allowed transgressions in order to save lives. In addition, the Nazis desired to destroy the Jews physically rather than spiritually, unlike other situations of persecution throughout Jewish history.
