Abstract:
The image of feminine Jewish hyper-sexuality developed by Russian romantic literature was transformed by Russian modernism (with its interest in sexuality) into the view of a carnal Judaism opposed to an exceedingly spiritual and ascetic Christianity. However, while Vladimir Solovyov expressed interest in and respect for Judaism, Vasilii Rozanov combined admiration, even envy, for the physicality of Judaism with an aversion to the Jewish spirit. He suggested that Christianity adopt Judaic respect for the human body, for sexuality and procreation, in order to thwart the victory of Judaism in the future. Rozanov's views caused him to support the prosecution in the Beilis case.
