Abstract:
Requesting rain is an integral part of prayer on weekdays and is supposedto coincide with the rainy season. This basic rule began to encountercomplications due to the demographic changes in the Land of Israel andthe diaspora over the generations. Jewish communities were establishedin areas where different geographical and climatic conditions prevailed. Thus, the proper time to request rain became a junction where liturgy, geography, history, and ideology meet. This article examines theunfolding of this dilemma from the Tannaitic literature to the Halachicand interpretive literature of the Middle Ages.A study of the development of the halacha, its formulation, adaptations, and interpretations, reveals various controversies and trendsas the times change, which reflect the changes in self-perception of theseJewish centers.
