Abstract:
Contends that the film "Les enfants du paradis", which was made in Vichy France in 1942 and shown after the liberation in 1944, is covertly antisemitic. Although a Jewish composer and a Jewish set designer participated in the production of the film, it contains antisemitic propaganda. The character of the peddler who comes between the hero and his beloved is depicted as a Jew who is traitorous and does not understand the feeling of love; this was meant to explain why Jews must be removed from French society. Although the writer Prevert and the director Carné collaborated on several films, after the war Prevert refused to work with Carné, possibly because he was affected by events of the Holocaust.
