Abstract:
Discusses the universalist ideology of Julian Morgenstern (1881-1976) of the American Reform movement, who served as the president of Hebrew Union College in 1922-47. Morgenstern viewed Zionist ideology, which was popular in the U.S. during the Holocaust, as being isolationist; he believed that Judaism could exist only within a universalist setting and that assimilation would ensure general acceptance of Jewish culture and values. He tried to convince Americans to oppose Nazism because it persecuted other groups, not only Jews, and believed that his approach was the most positive and courageous reaction to Nazism. After 1943 his views began to change as the Holocaust made him aware of flaws in his ideology, and he eventually supported the founding of a Jewish state.
