Abstract:
Traditional Austrian antisemitism, considered bearable by the Jewish population, underwent a transformation after the Anschluss, including violent physical attacks as Austrians took part in the pogrom of November 1938. Mentions the role of Eichmann in directing Austrian anti-Jewish policy, the large number of suicides among the local Jews, and the mass emigrations during 1938-39. Discrimination intensified from the autumn of 1940, and deportations from Vienna were carried out in the spring and autumn of 1941. 6,000 Austrian Jews were sent to Sobibór in the spring of 1942. The transport to Auschwitz in 1942 included about 1,000 Jews. The total number of Austrian Jews murdered in extermination camps is about 47,000.
