Kurzfassung:
Discusses the case of Roderigo Lopez, Queen Elizabeth I's doctor, a Converso who was accused of conspiring to poison the queen and hanged in 1594. The accusation was instigated by Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex, head of the anti-Spain faction at the court. Disagrees with recent works by James Shapiro and David Katz, who both believe that Lopez was guilty. Describes the negative image of the Jew and of Jewish doctors in English society, and how the court and the London mob were stirred up against Lopez, who was called a "murdering traitor and Jewish doctor." States that Shakespeare did great harm to the Jewish people through the creation of his character Shylock, based on centuries of prejudice and Dr. Roderigo Lopez, who Meyers believes to have been innocent; contends that Shakespeare did this intentionally.
