Abstract:
Referring to Cardinal Lustiger's paper "From Despair to Hope" (in the same issue of this journal), discusses his stands on Judaism and the Jewish people on the background of the Vatican's changing attitudes towards Judaism since the Renaissance. Unlike the Catholic tradition of philosemitism motivated by the desire to convert Jews to Christianity, Cardinal Lustiger (a converted son of Polish Jewish immigrants) eschews any wish to see his fellow Jews follow his path. Argues that his position of giving the Jews a role in contemporary Christianity is closer to the traditional Protestant view of Judaism than to the Catholic one. Mentions the significance of the "Nostra Aetate" declaration, but considers it to be "too little too late."
