Kurzfassung:
Discusses the reading of books by Jews in the ghettos as a form of spiritual resistance and as part of their struggle to maintain their humanity. Describes the functioning of the library in the Vilna ghetto, run by Herman Kruk, and the children's library in the Warsaw ghetto, run by Basia Temkin-Berman. While many of the children who borrowed books admitted that they read in order to divert their minds from constant hunger, the books also allowed them to "experience" the many things that they were deprived of. Herman Kruk wrote that many people were addicted to books, reading fiction in order to remove themselves from the miseries of life in the ghetto, or reading historical works (e.g. about World War I) to make analogies and attempt to reach conclusions.
