Abstract:
Merker, a member of the Central Committee of the SED, and a non-Jew who had fought against antisemitism early on, was denounced in 1950 as a tool of "American imperialists and Jewish capitalists" and expelled from the party. In 1952, in the context of the Slánský trial, he was arrested and imprisoned until 1956. His arrest caused many Jews to flee to the West. In 1956 he was released; in a retrial the court declared his innocence, but he was never restored to political office. Pp. 643-667 contain the sentence and arguments of the High Court of the DDR which convicted him, and Merker's memorandum, submitted to the Central Control Commission of the Central Committee of the SED in 1956, restating and explaining his opposition to antisemitism and support for the Jewish victims of Nazism.
