Abstract:
Greenberg, an American art critic, contends that self-hatred is common among Jews. The chauvinism or isolationism of American Jews, even of those who are "positive" Jews and are proud of their Jewish identity, serves to increase their self-hatred. Although negative attitudes of non-Jews are the main cause of Jewish self-hatred, Jews should not allow antisemitism to overly influence their thoughts and actions. Both "positive" and "negative" Jews must deal with the events of the Holocaust, which was a punishment for the Jews' failure to defend themselves; their postwar efforts to prove that they can defend themselves against antisemitism may mitigate their self-hatred. Greenberg discusses, also, how he might overcome his own self-hatred.
