Abstract: The violent events that occurred in Palestine in1929 were an unprecedented shock for the Yishuv.Contemporary Yishuv newspapers indicate a focusnot on the tragedy itself but rather on distinguishingbetween two groups: the New Yishuv and the OldYishuv. The main victims of the riots, membersof the Old Yishuv, sustained accusations, curses, and criticism for not having defended themselves. The newspapers of the New Yishuv sharpened thedistinctions between these groups and framed thestory not as a tragedy of the Yishuv but rather asone group’s failure versus another’s success – theslaughtered versus the heroes. The Old Yishuv’sweakness was highlighted to associate the tragedyand the threat that it posed with one group asopposed to with the entire Yishuv. By examining theimpact of a number of commemoration activitieson the memory of the victims, this article clarifieswhether in historical memory the framing of theriots as pertaining to a certain group was successful.Exploring this topic also teaches us about theintensity of the hostility toward the Old Yishuv at theend of the 1920s.
