Abstract:
Discusses antisemitic aspects of Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice", noting that Shylock's profession, lending money with interest, was considered immoral by Christians, although it was necessary for the functioning of any economy. Notes that there is already enmity between the Jew Shylock and the merchant Antonio, and that Shylock's desire to take revenge for previous abuse by Antonio causes him to reject offers of larger payments at the trial. While Shakespeare probably did not actually know any Jews, the play is replete with traditional anti-Jewish stereotypes. Shylock is depicted as greedy and merciless; he believes that he has the right to avenge his persecution. His daughter Jessica, on the other hand, leaves her father and his Judaism to convert and marry a Christian. Shylock is torn between sadness over the loss of Jessica and happiness in the expectation of seeing Antonio suffer. However, the trial turns against him; he loses everything and is forced to convert.
