Abstract:
Throughout recent years, the Jewish settlers in the Gaza Strip have become more and more exposed to terror attacks. The governmental decision to implement the disengagement plan provoked feelings of uncertainty. However, quite surprisingly, the Jewish settlement prospered during those years – due particularly to the increase of religious families who came to live there. This research seeks to comprehend the religious discourse of the Rabbis of the Gaza Strip settlements through an examination of their public sermons. An analysis of the addresses held and written by the religious leadership reveals the psycho-social practices of the local spiritual leadership and how they interpreted their reality. This paper helps non-religious readers as well to comprehend how many of the settlers coped with the external danger of terror attacks and the internal threat posed by the government. This research also enables us to understand the motivation of settlers to remain in their homes, to resist evacuation, and to reject any form of cooperation with the authorities.
