Abstract:
Notes that the myth of a "tolerant cosmopolitan Odessa" is false; there were no less than four pogroms in Odessa in the 19th century. Focuses on the pogrom of 28-31 March 1871, which began with a conflict between Christians and Jews in the courtyard of the Greek Holy Trinity Church. The pogrom was accompanied by pillaging and murder, and the authorities had to resort to the use of weapons. Contends that measures taken by the authorities to stop the pogrom were insufficient and that many policemen sided with the perpetrators. The trials of the pogromists took place only half a year later, and the sentences for those found guilty were lenient; many pogromists were acquitted. A new police chief, Antonov, succeeded in suppressing anti-Jewish actions for a period of ten years. Posits that the pretext for the pogrom was a rumor that the Jews wanted to steal the remains of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch Gregory (who had been murdered in 1821 in Constantinople and buried in Odessa) on the 50th anniversary of his murder.
