Abstract:
Analyzes the role of the Zentrale Stelle der Landesjustizverwaltungen zur Aufklärung nationalsozialistischer Verbrechen by means of the case of the former camp inspector of Theresienstadt, Karl Bergel. Traces, besides details on Bergel and his criminal acts, the prosecution of Nazi crimes in Czechoslovakia. Although many testimonies proved Bergel's crimes, no sentence was pronounced. Argues that more than two-thirds of those accused by German tribunals were convicted for crimes committed immediately after 1933 or connected with the "Kristallnacht" pogrom. Discusses the "limitation of time" constraints on investigations against Nazi crimes. During the 50 years of the existence of the Zentrale Stelle, 563 culprits were legally convicted. Without the Zentrale Stelle there would have been no convictions at all. Authorities reported on 7,617 pre-trial proceedings.
