Abstract:
A lecture delivered at a conference of the Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung, Berlin, December 1994. Explains hatred of the Soviet occupiers as the central motive of Latvian nationalism. This includes the heroization of those Latvians who fought with the Nazis against the Soviets and who participated in the Holocaust, both in Latvia and elsewhere. The Jews are accused by the radical right of having collaborated with the Soviet occupation - even though this was their only alternative to Nazi terror and they themselves suffered disproportionately from Soviet oppression. Such views are propagated not only in right-wing publications but even in the mainstream press. Jewish politicians, such as the author, are accused by the radical right of belonging to a Jewish world conspiracy with the KGB, while the history of antisemitism is blamed on Jewish "anti-patriotism". There are no Latvian-language publications on the Holocaust in Latvia, nor is it taught in the schools.
