Abstract:
In September 1916 the German Minister of War ordered a census of Jewish soldiers for two reasons: to counter a census which was being carried out by the Jews, who might then demand the appointment of Jewish officers, and to investigate accusations by antisemitic groups that Jews were avoiding service at the front. The census was a blow to the Jewish community, which had hoped that participation in the war would remove the last barriers to their full emancipation. Although the results of the census were never officially published, the data was leaked and published in an antisemitic brochure. Statistics compiled by the Jews themselves greatly exceeded those given in the brochure. In the late 1920s, the Reichsbund jüdischer Frontsoldaten counted 12,000 Jewish fallen soldiers; officials at the German State Archives rejected this number, but in 1934 the Nazi regime allowed its publication.
