Abstract:
Makes the case that as a reaction to World War II, American domestic and foreign policy turned toward universalism. This humanitarian perspective was reflected both in the decline of antisemitism at home and support for the establishment of a Jewish state abroad. President Harry Truman reflected this change both personally and politically. A large part of the American public favored the establishment of Israel as a home for Jewish survivors of the Holocaust. The pro-Arab position of the U.S. State Department was rejected as favoring oil over humanistic values. The majority of Americans and their president wanted morality to be a basis for a new world that included a home for the Jews.
