Abstract:
Outlines the general background and the Australian experience of the Catholic-Jewish reconciliation process since Vatican II, and examines the principle features of the Australian "Guidelines for Catholic Jewish Relations" issued in May 1992, and their implementation and effect on Catholic-Jewish relations. The article is based on discussions with active participants in the reconciliation process in Australia. Examines theological anti-Jewish issues discussed in the "Guidelines", such as the teaching of contempt, the charge of deicide, the negative portrayal of Judaism in the Gospels, and the concept of a "new covenant". The document also relates to Christian responsibility for antisemitism and ultimately for the Holocaust, and to the Vatican's attitude towards Israel. "Guidelines" envisages two ways of implementing reconciliation: changes in Catholic teaching and preaching about the Jews, and engagement in interfaith dialogue.
