Abstract: Discusses the activities of a Jewish resistance group in Algiers which helped the Allies take over the city in November 1942, noting that Israeli historiographers view the group as a French one, although 85% of its members were Jewish. It was led by a Jew, José Aboulker, and was initially formed to defend the Jewish community against antisemitic attacks after the French surrender to the Germans in June 1940. Points out that there is no commemoration in Israel for this group because the Shoah is seen as European, and because the group was not Zionist or socialist. Criticizes Israeli historians, especially Haim Saadoun, for minimizing the group's importance and calling it a French group. A response by Saadoun (on pp. 159-161) notes that there has indeed been very little research by Israeli historians on the group in Algiers, but this is also the case for the entire Sephardi Holocaust experience, and therefore it should not be singled out for criticism. In addition, he states that he does mention the group as a Jewish one in his work.
