Abstract:
Presents a brief history of the attempt to create a national Holocaust memorial in Canada, which has been beset by a variety of problems due to shifts in public perception of the Holocaust and its significance. The debate began in 1997-98, when the idea was raised to include a Holocaust gallery in the War Museum, and continued through years of negotiation over building a Canadian Museum for Human Rights, which was opened finally in September 2014 in Winnipeg and includes the Holocaust gallery which the government originally promised to build in 1998. Focuses, also, on lobbying efforts of some Ukrainian Canadian leaders and their allies to remove the Holocaust gallery from the CMHR.
