Abstract:
Analyzes Primo Levi's work on Auschwitz "Moments of Reprieve". By the word "reprieve", Levi denotes gleams of mercy in the Nazi camps, able to re-humanize the camp prisoner, albeit for a short time. Compares the notion of reprieve to what philosopher John D. Caputo has described as Event, a stirring prompted by a call from alterity. Reprieve does not provide salvation, thus it can be regarded as a weak form of messianism, suspending but not cancelling the camp. Presents examples of reprieve from Levi's text.
