Abstract:
Reacts to the 2002 exhibition "Mirroring Evil: Nazi Imagery/Recent Art" at the Jewish Museum in New York. Lauds the decision to present such an exhibition as brave, and the ways the Museum sought to validate the act. Streses the right of post-Holocaust generations to confront the Holocaust and Nazism and explore people's fascination with fascism. Analyzes several works in the exhibition. Notes the offensive unemotional quality of the art works. Stresses the combination of attraction and repulsion produced. Concludes that the exhibition and its catalogue, and all the controversy they aroused represent a cultural watershed; thus, "Mirroring Evil" should be taken seriously.
Note:
On the controversy aroused by an exhibition concerned with the perpetrators of the Holocaust shown at the Jewish Museum in New York.
