Kurzfassung:
Examines the evolution of the French law dealing with the concept of "crimes against humanity, " as defined by the Nuremberg International Tribunal during the trials of Nazi war criminals. Analyzes the juridical aspects of the application of this concept during the prosecutions of Klaus Barbie and Paul Touvier. Mentions that until Touvier's last trial (1992-93), Frenchmen were punished only for collaboration or treason, and not for "crimes against humanity." Only during the last re-examination by the Court of Appeals of Versailles (1993) were Touvier's acts considered "crimes against humanity"; he was sentenced to life imprisonment in April 1994. Mentions that, as a consequence of this case, the French legislature adopted a new "crimes against humanity" law in 1992, reiterating French commitment to prosecute perpetrators of crimes against humanity.
