Kurzfassung:
Discusses how a reading of Bauer's collected essays "Rethinking the Holocaust" changed the views of the author, an American professor of religious studies and a teacher of the Holocaust. Idinopulos has adopted Bauer's stance that the Holocaust is an explicable event, and that bureaucracy or the banality of evil are insufficient explanations. He follows Bauer in stressing the place of antisemitic ideology and the role of the Nazi elite, as well as support for them amongst the German populace, in implementing the Holocaust. Bauer is credited for rejecting both determinism and demonization. His views brought Idinopulos to reject the functionalist approach to the Holocaust for failing to deal with the question of motivation, ignoring Nazi ideology, and denying Jewish resistance.
