Abstract:
In the 1960s-70s the focus of psychoanalytic scholarship relating to antisemitism shifted from the individual antisemite to the group. In the 1980s scholars realized that prejudice was inherent in the very structure of all groups. The insight that majority groups tended to perceive a threat from minority groups became a basis for the study of antisemitism. Surveys psychological interpretations of antisemitism from the early 20th century to the present, including Islamic antisemitism and the current European wave of antisemitism. Later works have focused on the large group's conscious and unconscious needs for identity as well as boundaries, for allies as well as enemies. Modern racial antisemitism reflects group pathologies. For example, national insecurity has led many people to believe in the myth of a Jewish drive to rule the world.
