Abstract: Describes three German-Jewish organizations for defense against antisemitism, all of them founded in the same year as the Centralverein - 1893: the Geschäftsstelle Köln of the Verein zur Abwehr des Antisemitismus (actually an independent organization run entirely by Jews, unlike the national Verein); the Vereinigung badischer Israeliten; and the Komite zur Abwehr antisemitischer Angriffe (Berlin). Unlike the CV, and in contrast to the contemporary trend toward mass politics, these were elite groups which worked behind the scenes. The organization in Köln engaged in mass propaganda through pamphlets and meetings, but always with non-Jewish sponsors, not under its own name. The Baden group dealt with antisemitic propaganda by publishing refutations and having the instigators prosecuted. The Berlin committee was mainly engaged in opposing antisemitic candidates for political office. All three were eventually absorbed into the CV.

Abstract: Whereas Jews had reacted passively to the antisemitism of the 1880s, believing it would disappear by itself, in the 1890s they began to resist it actively. This change resulted from a change in German political culture from rule of an elite to mass participation. Interest groups, such as the antisemites or the Catholics, gained influence through organization and propagandist appeal to the masses, and the Jews followed their example. At first resistance was individual and local, and took the form of articles in the press or prosecution of antisemitic agitators in the courts. The CV was founded in 1893 to finance and carry out activities on a larger scale. It not only carried out propaganda against antisemitism but also, through its lawyers' auxiliary, fought government discrimination of Jews. Notes that at this time many Jewish social and cultural organizations were founded, which were seen as a form of integration in German society.

Abstract: In the 1880s, most of the German Jews preferred to react to antisemitism with contemptuous silence; only a few Jewish activists participated in the struggle against antisemitism conducted by German liberals. The 1890s saw a growth in antisemitism, a growing involvement of the masses in politics, and mass propaganda methods. The Jews needed to readjust their reaction to antisemitism, to give up their passivity, and to adopt new propaganda techniques. The first Jewish organization of "verbal defense" in Berlin, the Vereinigung zur Bekämpfung der Rassenhetze (1892) was not so successful, but in the provinces the verbal defense strategy was much more widespread. One of the tactics was sending a Jewish speaker to antisemitic rallies. Another way of fighting antisemitism was through printed matter. In some cases, Jews resorted to non-verbal activities (e.g. boycott), and even to violence. The Centralverein did not adopt the tactics of Jewish activists of 1890-95, but from 1895 on it was accepted as the leading Jewish defense organization. Describes, also, the social composition of the Jewish activists of 1890-95.

Abstract: The activities of the Centralverein Deutscher Staatsbürger Jüdischen Glaubens (CV), established in 1893, were opposed by many German Jews, who preferred to keep a low profile. The organization attempted to counteract antisemitic propaganda, but its main goal was to legally protect the rights of Jews in Germany. The lawyers of the CV helped individual Jews bring libel suits, but faced difficulties when they attempted to sue writers or others who slandered the Jews as a group. In the latter case, they had to convince government prosecutors to act against the slanderers, and although they used public pressure, they were often unsuccessful. In the Weimar period, the CV convinced the government to order regional prosecutors to deal with cases of slander against the Jews, and to declare incitement against Jews illegal. However, the judiciary mostly opposed the republic and only sometimes punished slanderers of Jews with light sentences. By 1926 the lawyers of the CV realized they were not obtaining justice in the courts, but hoped the situation would improve; in the early 1930s they reverted to the "quiet restraint" that was preferred by most German Jews.

Abstract: Examines everyday antisemitism in Germany between 1920-33 through its manifestations in the internal tourism business. Jews constituted an essential part of the tourist trade that filled spas and other tourist facilities in Germany in the summers. Many of them encountered antisemitism in these vacation spots. In some cases, Jewish tourists were abused by antisemitic residents and vacationers; in others, it was the hotel owners who did not want to accommodate Jews. The Centralverein gathered information on antisemitic incidents in hotels, pensions, restaurants, etc., and compiled lists of antisemitic tourist facilities in Germany. Analysis of the cases detected by the CV and other Jewish organizations shows how ill-defined was the line between antisemitic and non-antisemitic hotel owners: e.g. many of them, although not antisemitic, opted to reject Jews as clients in order to attract antisemitic and pro-Nazi clientele who were a majority in some areas. Shows that, in the Weimar period, antisemitism became an accepted attitude, part of mainstream social life.

Abstract: Analyzes the cases of 86 Austrians who have been honored by Yad Vashem as Righteous Gentiles. Some of them helped Jews to emigrate between 1938-41, and some of them hid Jews. In 1943-44, Allied bombings destroyed Austrian homes and forced many Jews out of hiding; only 219 of those managed to hide in Vienna until the end of the war. Of the 86 rescuers, 11 were managers of firms in the ghettos and camps, who used their positions to save Jews. 36 were residents of Vienna, mostly women, who hid Jewish friends.28 were Austrians who, toward the end of the war, helped Jews who were either imprisoned, were engaged in forced labor, or had been sent on death marches. Eight other cases are Austrian exiles who helped Jews in other countries. Describes characteristics of the rescuers, types of rescue activities, the dangers and hardships involved, and the motives of the rescuers.
