Abstract:
Pope Clement VI (1342-1352) had a tolerant attitude toward the Jews. He believed there was a close identification between Christians and the people of Israel. During 1348-49, when Jews were accused of causing the Black Death and were massacred by the thousands, Pope Clement VI issued three papal bulls calling on Christians to protect the Jews and their property. He condemned the Flagellants for shedding the blood of Jews. He was also opposed to the forced conversion of Jews. However, the Pope admitted that he hated the Jews because they would not "accept the Faith and Salvation".
