Abstract:
Delineates the main traits of ethno-cultural stereotypes of the Other as they are formulated within language and folk beliefs among populations in Ukrainian and Belarusian Polesia, Western Belarus, Eastern Poland, and Bukovina, as well as amongst the Slavic minority in Lithuania. Based on interviews carried out in these regions in 2004-06, and written testimonies from previous periods (19th-20th centuries), brings examples of images of Jews, which include, for instance, belief in a Jewish smell (in some cases compared to an animal's smell) and in perverted Jewish life-cycle ceremonies (e.g. the Jewish wedding ceremony is conducted on a garbage pile). Analyzes the evolution of ethno-cultural stereotypes from the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st. Notes that, despite close contacts with Jewish neighbors, the stereotypical images predominate over clear knowledge that they are not true.
