Abstract: The rise of student antisemitism in the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität set the pattern for other German universities. Describes the unsuccessful struggle of the rector, August von Hofmann, to deny recognition to the antisemitic Verein Deutscher Studenten, to suppress the politicization of student elections, and to activate the "silent majority" of non-organized students from 1884 on. The Akademisch Liberaler Verein, founded by prominent literary and professional figures, served as a predecessor of the "Abwehr" movement against antisemitism. The 1890s saw the almost complete exclusion of Jews from student associations, resulting in the foundation of non-partisan student groups, and the Verein Jüdischer Studenten. Concludes that the debate on the right of Jews to enter academic society played an important part in the spread of student antisemitism, as well as the crisis in the labor market and competition for higher education.

Abstract: During the period 1871-1918 a Jewish educational elite emerged which strove to join the German "Bildungsbürgertum". The exclusion of Jews from academic and social life became a major student issue as a result of social conflict between upwardly mobile Jews, many of them of petty bourgeois origin, and German students who belonged to the old elite, at a time of crisis in the academic labor market. This crisis was blamed on the "over-representation" of Jewish students and other outsiders in academe. During this period, many German academics turned from liberalism to conservatism and to modern social antisemitism.
