Abstract:
Until the pogrom of 1941, the Jews expected to integrate into the Iraqi state, established in 1920. The pogrom planted seeds of doubt toward the assimilationist Jewish leadership in the minds of the community. Iraq's severe economic state, threat of upheaval by radical elements, as well as the creation of the State of Israel led the government to change its policy from protecting the Jews to a controlled repression in 1948. The expulsion of the Jews, and a compulsory population exchange of Jews and Palestinians, were considered by the government in 1949. After the arrest of a few leaders of the Zionist underground (established in 1942), the Zionists usurped community leadership. This helped pave the way to the denationalization law (9 March 1950), which permitted the Jews to leave Iraq by relinquishing Iraqi nationality, and resulted in the community's exodus to Israel.
