Abstract:
The Inquisition tribunal of Coimbra was founded in 1541, but started to function on a regular basis only in 1565, mainly as a tool against Judaizers. After the first visits of Inquisition staff in the region, many Conversos started to flee. A new law in 1567 prevented Conversos from leaving the country or selling property. Nevertheless, facing persecution, many left clandestinely after 1573 for France, Holland, and the Americas, and many more after 1580 for Spain. On the other hand, some remained or even returned to Portugal and arrived at a modus vivendi with the Inquisition, by taking advantage of legal loopholes in the Holy Office's regulations.
