Abstract: Based on a lecture delivered in May 2003 at the University of California, Santa Cruz. After three waves of antisemitism since 1945, a fourth began in 1999-2000. The latter has been a European, guilt-based, largely middle class and intellectual one, which will eventually pass. However, much more dangerous is Islamic radicalism, a developing ideology that goes beyond fundamentalism and fuels terrorism. It holds that the West is in decline and that the future belongs to Islam, and entails the abolition of politics and of national states. This utopian apocalypticism would lead to massive killing. The ideology parallels both Soviet communism and Nazism, with the Jews seen as the main enemy. This anti-Jewish ideology precedes the current Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, with Sayid Qutb beginning his antisemitic writings soon after the State of Israel was established. Contends that a Palestinian-Israeli compromise will moderate but not end the genocidal threat which will be extended to the Jews and then to others. Recommends mass propaganda led by non-radical Muslims; economic investment not via existing governments; political alliances against radical Islam; and force only as the last alternative. The West is indeed in decline and regression, while 18 million Muslim immigrants in Europe are not yet radicalized. The threat of genocide must be taken seriously and past mistakes must not be repeated.
