Abstract: In the 19th century a significant part of the Karaite popula-tion of Lutsk lived not in the town itself but in surrounding villages and farmsteads. A document from 1824 found in the community’s archive, namely a draft of a petition of two leaseholders from the Mokowicze village, sheds some new light on the economic situation of the Lutsk Karaites. It also makes possible to supplement the list of villages where their presence has been documented

Abstract: Karaim is a severely endangered language belonging to the Turkic language family and its only surviving dialect is Northwest Karaim with speakers in Lithuania and Poland. In the past few years numerous Karaim translations of the Bible have been discovered. Some of these are among the oldest texts written in this language. The authors present some of the oldest Karaim texts known today as well as recently discovered Karaim translations of the entire Tanakh. It is shown how these recent research results have broadened our knowledge regarding the Karaim written heritage. Furthermore, some preliminary conclusions are drawn on the relationships among the manuscripts and the biographies of the copyists and translators involved in their creation. Textual similarities between sources created separately in communities located far from one another in the regions of Crimea, Lithuania, Volhynia, and Galicia suggest that a common Karaim tradition of Bible translation must once have existed. Moreover, the textual complexity and the use of sophisticated translation techniques in the oldest known texts support the claim that they were based on older texts or on a well-established oral tradition of translation.

    Angaben zur Quelle: 279 (2021) 691-705
Keywords: Karaites History 18th century ; Names, Personal ; Names, Personal Jewish ; Nicknames ; Crimea (Ukraine)
Abstract: The surnames of Karaites from Crimea have long been of interest to both scholars and the Karaites themselves. Several collections of such names have been produced, including a list found in a Karaite Russian-Polish dictionary ("Karaimsko-russko-pol’skij slovar’", Moscow 1974) and the electronic list of over 1,600 items made available recently. Three manuscripts in the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg - two records on the election of gabbais in 1788 and 1794 contain the names of the persons authorized to vote, and a list of wedding gifts from 1786 which contains the donors’ names – represent a valuable record of Karaite anthroponymy in the transitional period during which unofficial anthroponyms became protonames before they began to assume the final form as officially required surnames by the beginning of the 19th century. The article contains an analysis of origin and meaning of 34 anthroponyms appearing in these manuscripts that have not yet appeared in other sources.
