Abstract:
Discusses the importance of ideology for the Yishuv in Eretz Israel, which wanted to create a "new society" in contrast to that in the Diaspora. Analyzes various aspects of the relationship between the Yishuv and the Diaspora, focusing on the Yishuv's self-image and on myths regarding the realities of the Diaspora and the Holocaust. Quotes from literature and the press which underline the passivity of the Jews in Europe during the Holocaust. States that this point of view stemmed from ignorance; only many years later were these simplistic opinions changed. Mentions, as well, the Yishuv population's feelings of guilt due to their inability to rescue European Jewry.
