Abstract:
This paper examines R. Moses Cordovero's homily about the proper match betweena man and a woman and the history of the homily's reception in kabbalistic literature.Cordovero's homily is a chapter of his commentary on the Torah (a part of his vastmasterpiece Or-Yaqar ) The homily relates to the biblical story about Eliezer's journey to find a wife for Isaac. It deals with the ancient debate between the idea ofmarriage as pre-designated (even before birth) and the idea of marriage as determinedby individual choice and action. Cordovero claims that in order to find the wifeintended for him, a man has to maintain a righteous life. He emphasizes theimportance of the hidden path of the reincarnation status of the man and the womanfor a proper match, a successful marriage, and virtuous children. Cordovero himselfcopied this homily into a later section of his Or-Yaqar (Sabba de'Mishpatim) in orderto explain his attitudes about matches, marriages, and reincarnations again. SeveralKabbalists copied the homily as a separate unit of his Or-Yaqar – his commentary onthe Zoharic literature. These Kabbalists were interested in Cordovero's ideas asexplicated in this homily and they disseminated them.
