Abstract:
A survey of references to Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice" and to the image of Shylock in Israel and in Arab countries (mainly Egypt) during the 20th century. Gives information on the first translations and stage productions of Shakespeare's play in Hebrew and Arabic. Describes an antisemitic Arabic play by Ali Ahmad Bakri (born in Indonesia, emigrated to Egypt), entitled "Shylock al-jedid" ("The New Shylock"), published in 1945. Notes numerous references to Israel as Shylock in the Egyptian press, and a diplomatic incident, in 1978, when a leading Egyptian newspaper called Israel's Prime Minister Begin Shylock, referring to Israel's negotiations over the occupied territories. Notes many references in the Israeli press, as well, to Shylock and the "pound of flesh". In the Arab world, the term "Shylock" is widespread as a pejorative description of Israel.
