Abstract: The literary force of Psalm 58 is achieved through a rapid transition between images throughout the psalm. In no other psalm are there so many exuberant images compressed into so few lines. The images in the psalm are dramatic and conveyed in robust and original language. These coalesce around the figure of the wicked – from a sharp condemnation of his actions (verses 2–6) to a firm appeal for his prosecution (verses 7–12).Further division into sections has been suggested based on parallels in content and language between various parts of the psalm. However, these parallels are not consistent throughout the entirety of the structure, and their significance for understanding the psalm’s main burden is unclear. In this article, we propose a new symmetrical structure for the psalm, showing how the recurring expressions and synonyms used in the psalm lend it a consistent and systematic structure that reveals its meaning.

Abstract: This paper examine Nahmanides’ rhetorical style in his Torah commentary, addressing his convention of concluding his biblical commentaries with a flourish, both in form and content. The origins of this rhetorical device in the literature preceding Nahmanides is presented, followed by a demonstration of its embodiment and development in Nahmanides own Torah commentary.

Abstract: Melchizedek and Ahimelekh, two biblical priests, who are also referred to as ‘king’, grant priestly gifts to a war refugee (Genesis 14:18; 1 Samuel 21:7). Christian interpretation made use of these priestly figures and their priestly gifts in order to establish the new priesthood of Jesus. This paper brings to light Joseph Kimhi’s overt and covert polemic regarding these two priests and their priestly gifts in order to defend the eternity of the Levitical priesthood and that of the sacrificial rite in the Jerusalem Temple.

Abstract: This article shows how Nachmanides' commentary to the Torah, which is primarily a functional text, was also composed as an artistic literary text. It demonstrates Nachmanides' extensive use of rhetorical means that contain an element of repetition: of sound, root and content. His diverse repetitive means are not only an artistic embellishment that imparts special beauty to his writings, but also serve as a useful device in highlighting central ideas in his interpretive and philosophical doctrine.

Abstract: Nahmanides (R. Moses ben Nahman), the spiritual leader of Catalonian Jewry in the thirteenth century, showers his affection on Aaron throughout his commentary on the Torah. This disposition finds expression in three main ways: he stresses Aaron’s physical and spiritual perfection, even when these are not indicated by the scriptural text, and even when they run counter to explicit midreshei halakhah; Aaron is included, in exceptional manner, in Nahmanides’ typological exegesis, that is devoted to the Patriarchs; and Nahmanides consistently adds laudatory appellations to Aaron’s name, ones that Aaron had not been given by earlier commentators. The article offers an explanation for this singular attitude in light of the Christian exegesis of the figure of Aaron.
