Abstract:
Discusses the contribution of the Italian Jewish writer Gedalya Ibn Yahya (1526-1587) to Jewish historiography through his book "Shalshelet ha-Kabbalah" (1587) which describes the oppression and persecution of Jews in medieval Europe, and especially the forced conversion and subsequent general expulsion of the Jews from Spain and, later, Portugal. He also documented the establishment of the Inquisition and its persecution of Conversos in both countries. States that Gedalya corroborated his account with Jewish sources and oral traditions, and with non-Jewish sources, in order to shed a new light and provide more information on the events, thus revealing himself to be a valuable chronicler.
