Abstract:
The Yishuv saw itself as a "chosen elite", destined to build up the Land of Israel and create a new type of Jewish community. They differentiated between the "halutzim" and other Jews in whom they had little interest. They identified with their fellow Zionists who were fighting for their lives in occupied Europe, but did very little to help them actively; it was felt that building up Israel was the best way to contribute toward a solution to the Jewish situation in the Diaspora. After the war, with tremendous effort, the country absorbed hundreds of thousands of displaced Jews. The contradictions and contrasts in the Yishuv's self-image must be taken into account in understanding its reactions during the war years.
