Abstract:
Surveys the political and ideological background to the emancipation of the Jews in Germany and reactions of Jewish intellectuals - among them, religious reform and the first German-language works addressed to both Jews and non-Jews, intended to create a favorable public atmosphere for emancipation. These intellectuals accepted the demand for self-improvement in return for civil rights, unlimited faith in the state, and the "lachrymose" view of Jewish history as a saga of persecution and suffering which had deformed both the Jews and Judaism but could be ended by emancipation and enlightenment.
