Abstract:
Discusses Arendt's "Eichmann in Jerusalem", and argues that her expression "the banality of evil" was misunderstood by critics unfamiliar with her theory of totalitarianism. Precisely the fact that in the Nazi state Eichmann's crimes were everyday, "banal", is what is so frightening. However, asserts that Arendt had no right to condemn the "Judenräte" for collaborating with the Germans; she herself was never forced, as they were, to choose between the death of all and the possible survival of a few.
