Abstract:
The pogrom in Bucharest, which was part of the abortive Legionary rebellion of January 1941, is the most visually documented event of the Holocaust in Romania and Romanian-held territories. Most of the photographs were taken after the pogrom, by Jewish photographers. Thus, in contrast to the photographs taken during the pogrom in Iaşi in June 1941, they show the aftermath of the pogrom as seen by the Jews. Most of the photographs show the dead bodies of victims and the devastated synagogues, and can be used as documentation. Includes here photographs of the destruction of the five main synagogues of Bucharest, as well as some other images.
