Abstract:
Distinguishes three periods in the evolution of German historiography on Nazism and on the Holocaust: 1) 1924-1944, in which the political struggles of the time are highly predominant; antisemitism is presented as a political ploy on the part of the Nazis; 2) 1945-1960, characterized by emphasis on the fall of the Weimar Republic and the structure of the totalitarian state, with almost total silence on the issue of the "Jewish question"; 3) 1960-1984, in which the focus is on the German historians' conflict between the "intentionalist" and the "structuralist" schools. Concludes that the time is now ripe for a synthesis of the various approaches.
