Abstract: Although the tractate Avot was originally meant to serve as a guide for leaders and judges, since the Middle Ages it has been perceived as an anthology addressed tothe public. Literary commentaries on Avot started appearing in the thirteenthcentury and on, after Maimonides' Avot commentary on the Mishna wasdisseminated. This article suggests seven criteria to outline the uniquecharacteristics of the Avot commentaries as a distinct genre within ethicalliterature: status, space, language, structure, form, content, and purpose. Thecriteria are interconnected, at times tightly and at times loosely.Classification into genres may assist the researcher in identifying the uniquecharacteristics of everything that is included in the discussed genre, and at the sametime, help in identifying its interface with adjacent genres. Said classification mayalso assist in distinguishing the essence from what is less important. To all of thatone should add its contribution to classifying essays within a particular genre or The Way of the Book: A Tribute to Zeev Gries [xx]similar ones, according to similarities and dissimilarities. Genre classification is atool, and as such, one should use it as long as it is useful
