Abstract: Based mainly on testimonies of survivors, discusses the history and fate of the Jewish community of Nowogródek (or Novogrudok) in Poland (now Navahrudak, Belarus). At the time of the German occupation in June 1941, there were ca. 6,000 Jews in the town (about half of the population). A Judenrat was appointed and many Jews were taken for forced labor. In December 1941, between 4,000-5,000 Jews of the town were massacred; those remaining were interned in a ghetto. Several thousand Jews from the surrounding area were brought into the ghetto. In August 1942 there was another massacre, and only ca. 1,200 Jews remained. After each massacre, some Jews managed to escape to the forests and joined partisan groups, including the Bielski group. More Jews were killed in February and May 1943. The last group of ca. 230 escaped through a tunnel in September; most of them joined the Bielski group. Thanks largely to this group, 300-400 Jews from the town survived the Holocaust.
