Abstract:
After summarizing Adorno's theory of antisemitism as a structural element of the authoritarian personality, discusses the criticisms and modifications of this theory by his successors, pointing out their weaknesses. Proposes an approach that takes into consideration new developments in the social sciences, such as the "linguistic turn"; and a concept of antisemitism not as a collection of inconsistent, irrational stereotypes but as one side of a pair of opposites: the Jews as a non-people, strangers without an identity, neither friend nor foe and therefore more threatening than any foe, versus the ethnic "we-group", our own people, and all other peoples, who do possess an identity (no matter whether good or bad).
